Chatham is one of three towns call the Medway Towns and as the name suggest, lies on The River Medway. Rochester preceeds Chatham which, in turn leads in to Gillingham. Chatham is a bustling working town and although is boasts the Chatham Dockyard this was abandoned by the Navy back in the mid 1980s. The Historic Dockyard is now a popular Tourist Attraction. (The dockyard is also where Charles Dickens' father worked as a clerk). Chatham Dockyard was originally built to be a yard where the Navy repaired vessels which then progressed on to be a busy ship building yard.
